I was recently reminded of a Facebook post I posted 4 years ago about using our “smart phones” to become smarter. In that posting I said…
“There are wiser uses for your “smart phone” than keeping up with celebrity gossip, fight videos, porn or other useless things. Why not get an audio book(audible.com), why not sign up for an online class(udemy.com), why not sell something online(eBay.com & Amazon.com), why not buy an ebook(kindle, iBooks, etc), why not start an affiliate program biz(clickbank.com)… why not use your smart phone to become smarter?”
If we own a smartphone(iPhone or Android) then we are carrying around a small computer in our pockets everyday.
Some of the things we used to rely on a computer or laptop for are right in our hands now. Word processing, spreadsheets and powerpoint can now be designed and shared on your smartphone. Video recording, editing and sharing can now be done on your smartphone. Website design and maintenance can now be done from your smartphone. Video conferences can now be done from your smartphone. And on and on the things that can be done are nearly endless.
There is an app for nearly all things.
As we can see, so far, we have a mighty tool in our hands. So, why do we use such a powerful tool for such senseless things and not for the powerful potential it has?
In the following, I wish to share some of the wise uses for this mighty smart phone.
- Education- I am not limiting this point to traditional schooling, though one can use the smartphone for higher education, but I want to touch on knowledge in general.
- Make Money- This is one of the most popular and more desired uses of the smart phone. Everyone wants to learn how to sit at home and become a millionaire from the phone. While the claims can sometimes be exaggerated, there are ways to legitimately make extra side income or even transition into full time income from home with your smartphone. You can sign up for affiliate programs and promote them through your social media channels to make some extra money. If you become popular and build up a large enough audience then YouTube and Podcasting can earn you money by sharing audio/video content that is valuable to your audience. You can focus on a niche(health, exercise, self improvement, education) and build a blog or website that provides the useful information and provide products or services for cost. Ebay, Amazon and Facebook marketplace allows us to reach larger audiences to sell our products. If you have skills in valuable areas like web design, seo, digital marketing, graphic design, etc you can market your skills online to persons needing such skills via Fiverr and Upwork.
- Spiritual enlightenment- When the pandemic closed most religious houses of worship, March 2020, it was modern technology that allowed the Sunday lectures to be filtered in our homes and throughout the world. This option was also used by various churches throughout America to spiritually feed their parishioners.
- Network- With Reddit, discussion forums, Facebook groups and other platforms, we are communicating with a wide demographic like never before. The world is truly connected. I have met and communicated with people from the UK, parts of Africa, Malaysia and throughout the U.S. None of this would be possible without the modern technology of digital tools. We are seeing how zoom calls and other video conferences tools are replacing the needs to meet in person for conferences and other business endeavors.
- Brand Y-O-U With the modern technology of social media, video platforms(Youtube), blogging, podcasts, etc, you are able to build a brand for yourself. What was once difficult and required a middle man, can now be achieved by you. Anyone can now get online build an audience, produce digital products, communicate with your fans through social media or email marketing, broadcast your self through video channels and become well known. You can build a tribe of supporters around a brand or yourself.
As can be seen there are many wise uses for this great technology we carry in our pockets daily. The next time you pull out your smartphone, decide that you will try using it for wiser purposes rather than just the frivolous.
