• Why posting consistently is not enough if your message changes from one post to the next.
  • How a clear personal brand helps people connect your name with a specific kind of value.
  • How your own digital visibility has created speaking, consulting, and international opportunities before you ever entered the room.

We live in an amazing time where everyone has the potential to to be visible locally, nationally and worldwide. There was once a time where visibility was hard to get unless you were rich, famous, a politician or you did something infamous that got you placed on the nightly news. Back in the day, even if you did get visibility it was limited to your city or immediate area. However, times has changed in the past 26 years and anyone with a smartphone has the basic tool to record their voice, record a video or write something that can be seen locally and potentially worldwide.

You have the potential to be seen, but what will you be known for? This is where personal branding comes into play. Everyone has a personal brand, the thing that comes to top of mind when you are mentioned. You can develop a personal brand intentionally and unintentionally through repeated behaviors, messaging and content. For example, the person who consistently speaks and writes about health & wellness topics online becomes branded as the “health and wellness man or woman”. Whereas, the person who constantly keeps online gossip and negativity develops a brand around those negative characteristics.

Therefore, the first work to start before we get further into your visibility is discovering what is it that you are known for presently? If this aligns with what you desire to project then we keep it. If there is no clear brand being positioned then we create it. Based on an audit of your social media activity for the past 30 days answer the following:

  1. What is the overall topic you post about the most?
  2. What online groups do you naturally go to and comment in?
  3. Is there anything people online come to you for advice?
  4. What types of post do you feel most excited to engage with?

These could tell us what you are possibly already known for on the digital landscape.

If the audit didn’t bring up anything that makes it clear what you are known for based on your regular posting patterns then let’s create your personal brand. Based on your answers to the following questions we will pinpoint your passion and useful knowledge:

  1. What is something you are knowledgeable and passionate about that can serve others?
  2. What Skills have you developed that could help someone else?
  3. Based on your life experiences what stories could you tell that would motivate, instruct or guide someone?

The above questions are important to get clarity around who you are, what you are about and what you have to offer. There is plenty of noice online as billions of people from around the globe are getting online and engaging within the digital landscape. Becoming visible can get you seen, but what will they see when the encounter you if clarity hasn’t been established. If you are not fully clear on this yet I would advise you to either review the questions above or review the answers you have already given. Many digital marketers, myself included, will advise you to post consistently online, but this consistently doesn’t mean just post all the time; it further means to be consistent in the message that you post. If your messaging is all over the place how can an audience come to know, like and trust you?

Applying this to myself, I have used this formula to create a presence online that is very clear as to what I am about. Whether you visit my website, blog, YouTube channel or various social media channels, you get the clear understanding that I am into digital marketing, AI and winning on digital platforms. This is my brand! Based on me being clear with this positioning, I have been able to secure invites to speak at colleges, speak internationally, contribute to interviews, secure clients for my business offerings and more. There is a saying: “His reputation precedes him/her. You want to be in a position where your brand or reputation travels beyond your city, your state or even your country to give you visibility to create opportunities for you.
